Wlodowa – Sobibor – Chelm – Krasnystaw

The next day we went to Wlodowa, a provincial town not far from Sobibor. The beautifully restored synagogue there had been transformed into a museum. The photographic exhibition is testament to the local Jewish community. Scores of political and cultural organisations once thrived in the area. Among the pictures of sports groups and paramilitary training groups was a photograph including the founder of the Revisionist party, Vladimir Jabotinsky.

At Sobibor we were surprised to find a small museum. The exhibition contained within was small but extremely informative. It seemed, however, that we were the only ones who had made the trip to see it for the two hours we were there.

From Sobibor we made our way to Chelm – the city of fools, and then onto Krasnystaw. We quickly developed a knack for locating former synagogues. In the case of Krasnystaw, the synagogue is now a warehouse.
